Why Do We Like To Scare Ourselves?

Screaming face

We are fascinated by scary creatures with supernatural and potentially dangerous powers. In a paranormal romance book, we even fall in love with monsters. We are terrified and drawn to them at the same time. Why do we like to flirt with fear?

One reason may be that we are attracted to qualities we lack ourselves. We admire a creature that is fearless, powerful, and unbound by the rules of normal society.

Maybe we sometimes want to be scary and frighten away people who make our lives difficult.

We fantasize about being whisked away from our everyday lives to experience a world of adventure–the key to every good adventure being fear. Fear of death, fear of pain, fear of loss: the stakes must be high for the payoff to be gratifying.

Fear also triggers the fight or flight response, releasing a chemical soup that gives us a natural high. That’s why we seek thrills from haunted houses, theme parks, and slasher films. Strong bonds are created between humans during fearful situations as our bodies are flooded with these hormones.

Paranormal romance books are not as scary as horror books, but they do include elements of the terrifying and grotesque; causing goosebumps, chills, and sweaty palms.

Maybe that’s why we fall in love with paranormal heros. The same fear we feel in the presence of a vampire, werewolf, or demon is the same fear that casts a spell on us and binds us to them for eternity.

About shondabrock

I'm a southern in my heart and a northern in my soul. I've had a few bad wines, but for the most part I've enjoyed enough good wines that it makes up for the few bad bottles. I enjoy writing, but more than writing itself, I love telling a good story, taking my reader off on an adventure starting with "What If"…. I'm a sucker for the Paranormal Romance genre. To me, its nice to be released from "What Is Expected" and believe for 250 pages in "What If's". Its like a vacation with out passports, waiting in line and an expensive credit card bill when you return home. An additional note: I've started another blog page for Home Care. I know the two are unrelated, but in my world they are. My paying job is 100% dedicated to Home Care and educating families on their new journey. One of my favorite quotes, I leave with all of my clients. "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." - by Henry Miller Please Enjoy, but more importantly Stay Inspired…

  1. An interesting choice of words: “…casts a spell on us and binds us to them for eternity.” Do you believe there’s something in each of us that seeks to be bound? Not just friendship or companionship but something deeper, a need to bare one’s soul to something powerful–even dangerous–and trust that we are forever accepted?
